Enabling detailed errors messages within InstantForum & InstantKB

Common Questios

When troubleshooting installation issues or run-time errors within our software it's often helpful to enable detailed error messages. Detailed error messages are not enabled by default within our software for security reasons.

Enabling detailed error messages can reveal sensitive information about your installation to end users. For example the physical path to your installation or the windows account running the ASP.NET process. For these reasons we would strongly suggest disabling detailed error messages once you've completed troubleshooting.

Enabling Detailed Errors

1. Open your web.config within NotePad and change the mode attribute of the customErrors element to "Off" as shown below...

<customErrors mode="Off" defaultRedirect="ErrorPage.aspx">
<error statusCode="403" redirect="ErrorPage.aspx"/>
<error statusCode="404" redirect="ErrorPage.aspx"/>
<error statusCode="500" redirect="ErrorPage.aspx"/>

2. If your running within a Integrated Application Pool (IIS7+) you will also need to add or update the the <httpErrors> element within the <system.WebServer> element. To show more detailed error messages please ensure this reads....

<httpErrors errorMode="Detailed" />

Once you've enabled the detailed error messages please reproduce the problem again and post the full stack trace that you should now see via our ticketing system.
