Help & Support

Unable to login to either InstantForum or InstantKB using IE10 or IE11

If you have not yet verified your InstantForum or InstantKB installation for compatibility with the latest versions of several browsers including Firefox 5 or Firefox 6, Internet Explorer 10 & 11, you may want to do so now.

NOTE: This information does not apply to InstantForum 2014 or InstantKB 2014. Both these releases include the latest browser definition files for full IE10 & 11 support. This information only applies to InstantForum 2013 or InstantKB 2011 or earlier versions.

When a request arrives at an ASP.NET application/web site, the .NET run time reads some information in the request header to determine the client browser and it's capability. Once read, the identity of the browser is stored in the Request.UserAgent property, and, the capability of the browser is stored in the Request.Browser property..The capabilities for the browser are determined from your browser capability files installed as part of ASP.NET. based on the user agent determined from the headers.

If .NET cannot recognize the capabilities of newer browsers (they are not defined in your capability files on your web server) certain features like JavaScript or Cookies may not work correctly within our software as the .NET framework will often query the Request.Browser object to determine if the browser supports certain features like cookies.

This is a known defect in both the .NET 2.0 and .NET 4.0 Framework which does not support the latest releases of these browsers in their current browser definition files. Fortunately, Microsoft has released a fix in the form of NuGet Packages that you can apply to your website now to remedy the situation.To save you the trouble we have also requested this hot fix from Microsoft and provided the hot fix in a link below for both .NET 2.0 and .NET 4.0.

This issue should not affect .NET 4.5.

To resolve JavaScript or login issues with IE10 or IE 11 please download the attached browser definition ZIP file at the bottom of this article. You will need to extract this and place the "App_Browsers" folder into the root of your InstantForum or InstantKB web application.

This will resolve the problem for both .NET 2.0 and .NET 4.0 environments.

You will need to apply a specific hotfix depending on which version of .NET you are using.

If you prefer you can also obtain NuGet packages to resolve this problem.

For further information and to learn how to download the Nuget packages please see the link below...

Other Suggestions

To force IE10 to use cookies you can modify the web.config file. In the InstantForum or InstantKB web site folder open the web.config file within NotePad or similar plain-text editor. Locate the <authentication> element and change or add the “cookieless” attribute as shown below…

<authentication mode="Forms">
    <forms name="InstantASP" cookieless="UseCookies"  loginUrl="Logon.aspx" protection="All" slidingExpiration="true" path="/"/>

I hope this helps our customers resolve a common problem we see reported.

If these steps don't help resolve your problem of course please don't hesitate to contact us

UPDATE: For IE11 issues please use the App_Browsers(IE11).zip enclosed below.
