Ban IP Address

This option will add the members IP address to the list of banned IP addresses maintained within InstantForum. If a users IP address appears within the banned IP list the user will not be able to post, login or create new accounts from that IP. You can view & edit the list of banned IP addresses within InstantForum from the Admin CP > Banned IP Addresses page.

NOTE: If you have StopForumSpam.com integration enabled when using this options the users username, email address & IP address will also be added to the StopForumSpam.com database to help protect you and other communities in the future. A confirmation box will be displayed to confirm this action.

Ban IP + Delete Member

This will add the users IP address to the InstantForum banned IP address list and will delete the member and all posts for the member. This is the easiest option to help use if you know for sure the poster is a spammer and you wish to tidy up that users activity.

NOTE: If you have StopForumSpam.com integration enabled when using this options the users username, email address & IP address will also be added to the StopForumSpam.com database to help protect you and other communities in the future. A confirmation box will be displayed to confirm this action.

Delete Member

This will simply delete the user and all posts from that user however it won't add the users IP address to the list of banned IPs maintained by InstantForum.

Show IP & Abuse Details

This option will show further information about the user account to help you decide if the poster is genuine.

Allowing Moderators To Ban Members

As an administrator you can enable or disable the ability for moderators to be able to ban members. To allow moderators to ban members you will need to ensure the "Can ban & delete members?" option is enabled when adding a new forum moderator to a specific forum or editing an existing moderator from the Admin CP > Manage Moderators page.

Using the Banned Members Group (Soft Bans)

The "Banned Members" member group is a built-in member group that simply has an association to the "Banned Members" permission set. The "Banned Members" permission set has many of the post, editing & upload features disabled ensuring members within the "Banned Members" member group cannot post or take advantage of many of the key features within the forum.

If you wish to ban or suspend a member whilst you resolve an issues with that member you can change the members primary member group to the "Banned Members" member group.

This will only restrict a specific member account based on the permissions defined within the "Banned Members" permission set. The problem member could register a new account using an alternative email-address to overcome the ban imposed on the member account. To prevent this for problem members you should also ban the members IP address as detailed below if needed.

Ban IP addresses

This is the most reliable way to ensure problem members cannot post further within the your forums. If a users IP address is found within the Members & Groups » Banned IP Addresses list, attempts to register any additional forum accounts, login using any existing accounts or post any messages to the forum will fail. You can manage banned IP addresses from the Members & Groups » Banned IP Addresses page.
